Development of the area around Roundabout Graniczne in Wroclaw
Urban tissue is a complex system that combines various functions – communication systems, building, urban greenery, pedestrian and bicycle routes, trade and services. These different elements create network of branches that define the space, leading from main routes to more local. This dependency became an inspiration to create a space based on the tree schema . Its „branches” spread out from the center of the roundabout Graniczne – the development center – and further radially to undeveloped land.
Natural features of tree branches have been preserved – their irregular structure, the angles at which they spread and variable width. Because of that terrain has strong tectonic character. After diagram transformation for the purposes of architecture, the branches have become the axes of high greenery for pedestrian communication and cycling. The spaces between them were filled with buildings. Propagated in a natural way streets, form squares and a framework for landmarks.
An additional aim to diversify the space is height variation of individual parts, which gives the effect of „waving space”. The green strings were lowered below ground level. These levels align with the ramp across the pedestrian and cycling communication. This applies also to buildings. Their roofs are inclined planes forming a continuation of each other.
